John, serving the Confederacy, enlisted as a Private in Company C, 1st Infantry Regiment in Alabama. He and Margaret moved their family from Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama to Collinsville, Texas in time for the 1880 census. Several of his sons went on to homestead in Erick, Beckham County, (old Greer County), OK in 1896 - 1898.
