Thomas MECHLING, 83y 05m 04d, died in this place at the residence of his nephew, Col William T MECHLING, on Sun last, 04 Feb 1900.

Born in Butler, 30 Aug 1816, was without doubt, (one of) our oldest citizen born here ...

Thomas, youngest child of Jacob MECHLING, Sr, one of the pioneers of this town & county, was born in a house that stood on the diamond where now stands the building occupied by the law offices of NEWTON BLACK, R P SCOTT & others. The old building was a noted hostelry (pictured on memorial) for many of the first years of Butler, known as the MECHLING HOTEL, the founder, Jacob MECHLING, Sr, . Jacob, was of the leading citizens of the county & one of its first 3 representatives in the legislature of the state, 1805-1808.

[Janet's note: The MECHLING hotel is where legend has it that the Marquis LaFAYETTE stayed when he visited Butler Co with George WASHINGTON. The hotel was a bank in Butler for many years but is now a Sr Citizen Ctr named the Lafayette Building.]

The earliest recollection this writer has of Thomas was as a merchant in a store with his bro Philip. that stood on the corner where now stands the Butler Co Nat'l Bank.

Afterwards. Thomas followed the river for sometime, as clerk, we believe, on a steam boat. When oil was discovered he went to the upper fields & followed the development down to when it reached Jefferson Centre, Butler Co. Near here as it happened, he owned a fine body of land, which he developed with considerable success. He also built a fine residence on this farm & lived there until he came back to this town to live with relatives. He was never married.

Thomas was a man of singular independence of character. No one ever had to doubt his views on any matter of public interest. Strictly honest in all his dealings & at all times outspoken in the defense of his right. He was respected by all as a man of truth & integrity.

Services, conducted by Rev BARROW of Episcopal Ch & Rev OLLER of Presbyterian Ch; burial: Lutheran South Cem alongside of his parents & other relatives lying there. His parents were Lutheran & he was raised in that church.
