PROTECTION Lula Marguerite Hughes, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin.

She was born June 12, 1921, to Edson Aubrey and Leta Hazel (Cline) Thompson at Coldwater. She married Alfred Hughes on June 8, 1976, at Fairview, Okla. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1995.

She was nearly a lifetime resident of Protection, moving to Lakin in 2000. She attended Cimarron Country School and Protection High School.

She was a cook for the Protection School System and also worked at Bill's Grocery Store in Protection for many years.

Survivors include one son, Donald Moore and wife, Sandra, Liberal; two daughters, Frances Young, Mullinville, and Patricia McCleary, Coldwater; two brothers, Melvin Thompson and wife, Jeanne, Coldwater, and Alfred Thompson and wife, Glennis, Coldwater; five sisters, Alma Favreau, Dodge City, Geneva Smith, Coldwater, Wanda Waller, Hollister, Calif., Janice Trebino and husband, Johnny, Hollister, Calif., and Joyce Vann, Garden Plain; 14 grandchildren, numerous grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Merlyn Mass; one brother, Elmer Thompson; and two son-in-laws, Dick Young and Roy McCleary.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, Protection, with Andrew Evans presiding. Burial will be in the Protection Cemetery, Protection.

Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hatfield Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association in care of the Hatfield Prusa Funeral Home, Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.
