Bill was born on a farm in Lura Township (Faribault county Minnesota) and his heart remained in farming all his life. In his younger years he spent summers on threshing crews and working hard on the family farm. As a young man he enjoyed playing football and baseball at Parker College (in Winnebago Minnesota).
In 1919 he married Nellie Wallace and turned his attention to farming the Whitney family farm, rearing five sons, milking cow, raising ponies and a big family garden. He was always a soft spoken man of few words, but those words carried a lot of power and punch, according to his sons. Bill came to enjoy baseball and became an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
Bill, Nellie and boys moved to the Wallace family farm south of Delavan in 1944. His family expanded into daughters-in-law and 18 grandchildren. He lived there until retirement and love of warmer weather took them to Florida in the winter and a new home in Delavan. When Nellie died in 1969, just after their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Bill met and married Eleanor in 1970. In 1992 Bill's health forced them to remain in Minnesota. His family continued to expand with 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great, great-grandchildren by 1996. He was a resident of St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center for about 3 years.
