American Botanist, Writer, Educator. After serving briefly as an apprentice in a machine shop, Trelease studied natural sciences at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Wisconsin until he was offered the job of director at the St. Louis Botanical Garden. Trelease directed the gardens for 23 years, identifying 2,500 species and varieties of flora. His publications include hundreds of scholarly papers as well as a set of guides for the everyday gardener.
