NILES -- James Patrick "Jim" Duggan passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at the Ottawa County Health Center in Minneapolis, from complications due to a stroke suffered on Oct. 27.
Jim, the first son of Helen Murphy Duggan and Elmer J. Duggan, of Niles, was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Salina. He graduated from Bennington High School in 1956. He attended Kansas State. He served in the Air National Guard from 1960 to 1966.
Jim's lifelong passion was farming and ranching. He was active in the American Agricultural Movement in the 1970's, the high point being the tractorcade in Washington, D.C., in 1979. He farmed with his father and brother, Robert, all his life. He was an avid reader and was continually exploring ways to improve his farm and ranch operations. Jim and Robert converted their farming practices to No-Till in the 1990's and appreciated seeing the benefits to the top-soil, water conservation and wildlife. Jim adopted range management methodology to his livestock operation integrating rotational grazing practices. He marketed his 'all natural beef' under the name, Cross Triangle Meats, incorporating the brand his father registered in 1938. Jim's picture, taken in his hay meadow where the Land Institute scientists were doing research, was featured in a National Geographic article in September 2008 about soils throughout the world.
He had an interest in World War II history and accumulated a substantial library dedicated to that study.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father, Helen and Elmer Duggan; and his nephew, Jeff Duggan.
He is survived by his brother, Robert and wife Carol; and three sisters, Peggy Maggard and husband Gene, and Eileen and Joan Duggan. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, Lisa, Connie, Laura, Kevin, John, Kim, Erica and Andrea; and 15 great-nieces and -nephews.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401, with a rosary service at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, with Father John Wolesky as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Solomon.
Memorial donations, in Jim's name, can be made to the Land Institute in Salina or the Ottawa County Health Center in Minneapolis.
