Dr. Melvin Gene Parks, MD 76 of Unionville, Missouri and formerly of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville Iowa.
He was born the son of Harvey and Waneta(Ryan)Parks on August 29, 1934 in West Grove, Iowa. He graduated from Bloomfield High School, Bloomfield, Iowa in 1952. He served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division. On his return, he received his undergraduate degree from Iowa States University and his medical degree from The University of Iowa in Iowa City. Dr. Parks practiced mediciane for over 33 years in Centerville, opening his practice in 1966. He was a senior partner with the Chariton Valley Medical Center. After retiring from active practice in 1999, he continued to participate in patient care. Dr. Parks was honored in 2005 with the Iowa Academy of Family Physaicians Lifetime Achievement Award. On November 9, 1973 he was united in marriage to Rita(Speidel)Riggall. Gene and Rita lived in Centerville, Iowa until retiring to Lake Thuderhead where they enjoyed water skiing and spending time with their family and friends. He was a member of the Centerville School Board and the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital board, serving on each for 9 years. Dr. Parks was a long-time member and Past President of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, the Appanoose County Medical Society, the Iowa Medical Society, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as Past President of Lake Thunderhead Association. Gene is preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Icil(Jones)Parks; Waneta Parks, who died when Dr. Parks was a toddler; son, Anthony Parks in 2005; brother, Ryan Parks; and brother-in-law, Don Faas. He is survived by his wife, Rita Parks; sons Dan Parks and wife Teresa of Grand Junction, Colorado, Brad Riggall and wife Linda of Centerville, daughters, Becky Cline and husband, Mike of Marion, Iowa, Robyn Pasa and husband, Dan of Kirksville, Missouri, Carrie Kaster and special friend, Dennis Hosey of Indianola, Iowa; sister, Elaine Faas of Ames, Iowa and Nancy Proctor and husband, Dennis of Bloomfield, Iowa, sister-in-law, Laurel Parks of Bentonville, Arkansas; grandchildren, Meghan and Preston Gebhart, Shannon Cline, Jamie and Michael Jolley, Antonio and Julie Caraccio, Patrick O'Donahue, Lacy Pasa, Willie Pasa, Thomas Parks, Danny Parks, Ben Parks, Alex Parks, Samantha Parks, Kathyn Parks, Alexis Riggal, and Cannon Riggall; and 11 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 3pm with Rev. Suzanne Gorhau officiating at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa. His body has been cremated.
In lieu of flowers there has been a memorial established to The Legacies Foundation Of Mercy Medical Center or Lewy Body Dementia Association.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
