Joseph was the son of John Simms Buckman & Elizabeth Roberts. He married Martha Ann Simms on 2 February 1839 & they had 8 children. He married Elizabeth Frances Fowler on 10 September 1867 & they had 3 sons. Joseph was a farmer & merchant. He was among the first to farm the prairie.
