Hit and Run Charge Filed in Killing of Sam Reitz Sunday

Information was filed in superior court today by Prosecuting Attorney J. E. Sareault charging George Hort, 34, of Scappoose, Ore., with hit and run driving in connection with the death of Sam Reitz, 73, who was killed instantly last Saturday evening on the Burnt Ridge road two miles east of Onalaska.
Reitz, a farmer, was struck by an automobile while talking with a neighbor, Henry Jorgensen, in front of Jorgensen's home, according to Sheriff J. A. Blankenship. Reitz was struck by the car which then clipped Reitz' car beside which they were standing; then dragged Reitz 100 feet; and continued on down the road another 100 feet before plunging into a ditch.
The car's driver then fled, running through the field. Jorgensen, who was hit by Reitz' car, was only slightly hurt.
Later, the sheriff stated, Hort appeared at the scene of the accident, contending his machine had been stolen from the home of his brother-in-law, Harry L. Mitchell, 46.
Dr. W. D. Turner, county coroner, said that Reitz was almost instantly killed, death being due to a skull fracture. His leg was broken also.
Reitz was born in Pennsylvania 73 years ago Monday. He moved to the Onalaska district 16 years ago. Funeral services were held at the Boone Mortuary this afternoon, the Rev. Herbert E. Gordon officiating, with interment at Claquato. Reitz had no relatives so far as known.
