Born to Cornelius Detmers and Esther Dahlberg, Larry was a promising baseball pitcher, being the most sought after rookie in Michigan after high school graduation, able to pitch a ball 90 miles per hour. His baseball career was cut short by induction into the US Army in 1953, serving as a radio operator in the Korean Theater where he also contracted malaria – an illness that would ultimately shorten his life. Marrying Berta Waynick in 1955, Larry went on to college, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1964 from Eastern Michigan University. He was a talented communicator with both adults and children and enjoyed a career in teaching and administration in both public and private schools. Larry designed and was responsible for the acquisition of a new school for Oshkosh Christian School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He served as the Director of Medinah Christian School, Medinah, Illinois. A devoted father and husband, Larry and Berta had four children, Becky Dawn Rapp, Brandt Deane, Kyle Wayde, and Jaason Aaron Detmers. He had one brother, Bruce R. Detmers, a half-sister, Blanch Detmers, and a half-brother, Clayton Detmers.
