James Hagin Morrow was the oldest son of Drury and Hetty Esther McCullough Morrow and was born in Indian Land, Lancaster Co., South Carolina. Sometime about 1853 the family came over the mountain from Indian Land, Lancaster, SC to East Tennessee and settled in Leesburg, TN. The story has been told by Aunt Selma Morrow Bolton that family came over the mountain going to Texas but stopped off in Tennessee because of the Civil War and their confederate money was no good and some of their slaves had left. Aunt Pearl Morrow Garst said family came over the mountain to Tennessee in 1818 and Aunt Edyth Morrow Rhea remembers hearing about family riding horses over the mountain. Census records show Drury and Hetty living in Lancaster, SC in 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850...so did Drury and other men go back and forth across the mountain about 1818? Drury did have partnerships with some men in South Carolina.

When the war began, James and John signed up to go to Corinth, Mississippi ; however, James was carefully examined at Bragg Hospital, Newnan, Georgia that found him to have a disease of the heart incapable to perform the duties of a soldier October 1862. James was a private in the J.G. Deadrick Company B 19th Tennessee Regiment enlisted by Lt C.M. Graham's CSArmy at Cumberland Gap August 15, 1861 to go to Corinth, Mississippi. He was discharged November 1862. He returned to Leesburg, Tennessee where on October 20, 1865 he married Rebecca Jane Carson. John, Drury and Sarah Alice were their children. After Rebecca died, he married Lucy Land October 28, 1875 and Vena, Alexander B. and James Franklin were their children. James and Rebecca are buried at Providence Presbyterian and Lucy is buried at Oakland Presbyterian.
