Mrs. Sanford McCully, 58 of east of Bachelor, was killed about 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning, August 3, when the car in which she was riding overturned on the gravel road, about 3 miles north of Byrd's station on Highway 40. According to information received by Coroner W. Pearl Garrett of Fulton, Mrs. McCully was killed instantly when thrown from the car after a tire blew out and the vehicle struck the corner of a low culvert, turned completely around and went down the road about 50 feet before going off into a ditch. There was no door on the right front side of the car and when the vehicle turned over Mrs. McCully was thrown out and according to report, her neck was broken. Her son, Frank McCully, who was driving the car, received a deep cut on his left hip, but ran to the home of Elmer M. Shelton, about half a mile away, to summon help. He was taken to the office of a Fulton physician for treatment. Ten stitches were required to close the cut. Mrs. McCully was the former Miss Myrtle Smith, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses (Mote) Smith, and was born December 26, 1891, near Calwood in Callaway County. She was married twice. In addition to her husband, Sanford McCully, she is survived by twelve children, as follows: George & Reed Dudley of McCredie; John Dudley of Willliamsburg; Mrs. Leonard (Viola) Shaon of Millersburg; Mrs. Ray (Lola) Stayman of Bridgeport, Nebr; Mrs. Allen (Mary) Lowry of Fulton; Sanford, Jr.; Homer, William & Frank McCully of the home; Mrs. Joseph (Tillie) Dearing of Holts Summit; and Mrs. William L. (Frances) Spradlin of northwest of Auxvasse. Other survivors include 21 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Elmer Newingham of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and one brother, Benny Smith of Calwood, and a half sister, Mrs. Lila Rhodes of Hannibal, Mo. Two sons Maxie McCully and Joseph Dudley, preceded their mother in death.All of Mrs. McCully's children and grandchildren, the brother, sister, and half sister attended the last rites with Mr. McCully. The funeral was held at the Old Auxvasse Presbyterian Church.
