After graduating from high school she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught grades 1-8 in a one room country school house in rural Minnesota. She was hosted and boarded with the local farm families of the children she taught.
Doris married Richard H. DeWitte December 26, 1950 in Pipestone Minnesota. They had seven children, John, Alan, Richard, Ann, Diane, Doreen and Tom.
In 1965 the family moved to Winter Haven Florida. Doris attended Polk Junior College LPN nursing program and was employed as an Intensive Care Nurse at Winter Haven Hospital from 1970 until she retired in 1995.
In 2005 Doris moved to Jacksonville to be closer to her daughters. She resided at the Towers of Jacksonville until her passing.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Anna, her sisters, Helen and Evelyn, her brother Harold (Pat), her son John, her daughter Doreen and her granddaughter Carmen.
Doris is survived by her brother Donald (Margret) of Grand Rapids Minnesota, her children, Alan DeWitte (Donna) Springhill Fl, Richard DeWitte (Debra) Naples, Fl, Tom DeWitte (Elba), Lake Alfred Fl, Ann Black, Jacksonville Fl and Diane Van den Avont (Christopher) of St. Augustine Fl, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at St. Vincent's Medical Center on Friday, September 24, 3:00pm.
