ASHTABULA — John E. "Scottie" Craib Jr., age 89, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, 2010, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born July 27, 1921, in Conneaut, the son of John E. Sr. and Isabella (Coutts) Craib. A 1939 graduate of Conneaut High School, he was a graduate of the Merchant Marines Academy of New London, Conn. and served with the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He was employed at The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company as a tower operator.
Mr. Craib was a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Conneaut, a 65-year member of the Elks Club, a 50-year member of Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM, a 50-year member of Rose Chapter #22 of Eastern Star, the Conneaut Historical Society and the Merchant Marines Veterans Association.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, spending time with his family and grandchildren, gardening and doing yard work.
Survivors include his wife, Betty O. (Yesso) Craib, whom he married June 7, 1947; a son, Scott A. (Caroline) Craib of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Heather, Ian and Colin Craib, who are all students at The Ohio State University; niece, Peggy (Donald) Watson of Fremont, Calif.; and a nephew, John (Judy) Yesso of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Anna Niemi.
Memorial Service will be held 12 p.m. Noon, Monday, Oct. 11th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Robert Leonard, pastor of Evangelical Reformed Church, officiating. The American Legion Cowle Post #151 and Bagpiper, Scott Treen will also participate. Entombment will be in Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of Service, Monday, at the Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Conneaut Food Pantry. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
