Fred Warren was the sixth child and second son of John Audy and Hazel Ake Warren. As the youngest child he developed the ability to get out of scrapes with contagious charm, a quick wit and cajoling ways. He could tell outrageous stories with a straight face and never tired of teasing his mother, sisters, nieces and nephews.

After preparing himself through formal education and accepting his call to the ministry, he was ordained as a minister of the Disciples of Christ on July 1, 1959, at Riverside Avenue Christian Church in Jacksonville, Florida, in the presence of family and friends. Subsequent to serving churches in the South and Midwest he pastored the Madison Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Huntington, West Virginia, for 33 years. Dr. Warren retired from this pastorate in 1998. While he was in WV, he served as staff chaplain at the Huntington Veterans Affairs Medical Center from 1972 until 2002.

The Reverend Dr. Fred Warren was the widower of Irene Vermillion Warren and was survived by two sons, James E. Warren of Pinellas Park, Florida, and Harry M. (Cheryl) Warren of Largo, Florida. Additional survivors included five grandchildren and four sisters: Wilma Schleicher, Verne Roquemore and Floyce Roberts, all of Jacksonville, Florida, and Oriska Henn of Tallahassee, Florida.

A memorial service was held at the Madison Avenue Christian Church with the regional minister of the Christian Church in West Virginia presiding. Recently, the Madison Avenue Christian Church established a summer internship for Disciples of Christ seminarians in honor of Dr. Warren. This educational opportunity will shape the lives of ministers to come, just as Dr. Warren shaped the lives of many.

Fred Warren "left a legacy of warm and gentle caring. Nobody he met will ever forget him."
