Actor, Director. Appeared on stage and in motion pictures from the 1920s to the 1960s. Best-known for his roles in "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" (1934), "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935), "Ruggles of Red Gap" (1935), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939), "This Land Is Mine" (1943), "The Big Clock" (1948), "Young Bess" (1953), "Witness for the Prosecution" (1957) and "Spartacus" (1960). Won a Best Actor Oscar for his lead role in the 1933 drama "The Private Life of Henry VIII." Directed the classic film noir thriller, "The Night of the Hunter" (1955). Married for many years to actress Elsa Lanchester.
