Arrate was a Basque sheepherder in the employ of Martin Amestoy. He died of wounds received in a gunfight with rancher Thomas Brackney in Grass Valley at Twin Springs Ranch. Arrate ran his sheep through Brackney's water supply and Brackney confronted Arrate. Although Brackney received two bullet wounds, he was tried for murder but acquitted.
