Arrate was a Basque sheepherder in the employ of Martin Amestoy. He died of wounds received in a gunfight with rancher Thomas Brackney in Grass Valley at Twin Springs Ranch. Arrate ran his sheep through Brackney's water supply and Brackney confronted Arrate. Although Brackney received two bullet wounds, he was tried for murder but acquitted. The gunfight occurred July 9. 1924; Arrate died of his wounds on July 11 in Austin, NV. Source: "1924 Murder led to Murder Charge" Reese River Reveille, 24 December 1992.
