Opal Elizabeth "Beth" Black, 88, a part-time special education instructor in Montgomery County, died April 21 of lymphoma at the Bedford Court Nursing Home in Silver Spring.

Mrs. Black began working for a Lions Club-sponsored special-needs preschool after one of her sons was born blind and with other disabilities. Another son was legally blind. Mrs. Black taught at the preschool for 37 years.

Opal Elizabeth Smith was born in Austin and graduated from the University of Texas in 1942. She worked as a home economics teacher in Texas and served with the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II.

After moving to the Washington area in the early 1960s, she was briefly an air traffic controller at what is now Reagan National Airport.

She was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Silver Spring and was a volunteer teacher of English to immigrants.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, David P. Black, a retired Air Force colonel and Episcopal priest, of Silver Spring; three children, Kay (Clay) Brooke of Columbia, Donald J. Black of Germantown and David M. Black of Greenbelt; grandmother of Scott (Angie) Brooke and Tiffany (Jan) Patterson. Also survived by five great-grandchildren.
