Ruth Abernathy Jordan , 98 of Camden, AR was born in Fordyce, AR on September 04, 1912 to James Albert and Lela Irwin Abernathy and passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010. She graduated from Fordyce High School and Ouachita Baptist College (now University) with majors in piano and English. She married George William Jordan and moved to Camden, AR in 1948 where she has lived ever since.

Ruth was a very active member of First Baptist Church in Camden where she taught Adult Ladies Sunday School Class for many years, served as staff pianist for 39 years and was active in Baptist missions organizations.

She served on the Board of Trustees at Ouachita Baptist University for 6 years. She endowed a music scholarsip at OBU, the Ruth and George Jordan Endowed Music Scholarship. She had a special interest in students majoring in church music and established the Ruth Jordan Music Scholarship at First Baptist Church in Camden.

Ruth was very active in the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs where she served both as President and Treasurer. She was Chairman of AFMC Junior Festivals for 21 years and Chairman of Artist Presentations for 21 years. She arranged the annual concert tours of Arkansas for the national winners of National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Auditions.

She was honored in 1992 with the Stinson Award for Woman of the Year in Camden. She was an active member of the Thursday Musicale in Camden, the PEO Sisterhood and the Camden Community Concert Association.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by two sons, George and wife, Lynn and Jim and wife, Janis all of Hot Springs Village; grandchildren, Lené Jordan of Jackson, WY, Michelle Carpenter and husband, David of Northridge, CA, Keri Bone and husband, Mike of Little Rock and Matt Jordan and wife, Crystal of Hot Springs; great grandchildren, Ben and Cal Brackin of Jackson, WY, Austin and Ellodee Carpenter of Northridge, CA, Jordie Bone of Little Rock and Tucker Otwell of Hot Springs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Ruth Jordan Scholarship Fund at First Baptist Church, 348 Washington Street NW, Camden, AR 71701 or to the Ruth and George Jordan Endowed Music Scholarship Fund, OBU Box 3754, Arkadelphia, AR 71998. A special thank you to Dr. Dan Martin, Silver Oaks Nursing Home, Ouachita Nursing and Rehabilitation and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a. m. Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at First Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Richard Piles officiated the service. Visitation was Monday from 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home. Proctor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
