Paul Rutan passed from this life March 28th 2000, in Mission Hills, California. Born Dec. 7th, 1918 in Natick MA. The last surviving child of seven, born to William and Anne Rutan.

Paul devoted his professional career to the advancement and development of Color Motion Picture Film processes.

Paul began his motion picture career as a clerk at Selznick Studios in the 1930's. He eventually obtained a clerical position at Columbia Pictures, where he met his wife of 62 years, Agnes. Paul moved to an accounting position at Technicolor Hollywood, in 1940. Rising to the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and by 1968, International Vice President.

During Paul's tenure at Technicolor he answered the call of the "Pre-Pearl Harbor Fathers" and served his country in the US Navy, during World War 2.

In 1968, due to his displeasure with non-industry management, Paul left Technicolor to become Vice President of Perfect Film Laboratories, President of Berkey-Pathe Laboratories and President of Movielab Hollywood. He successfully competed against Technicolor's Matrix Imbibition process with the then new Eastman Color Reversal Intermediate (CRI) process.

In 1974 Paul founded Optical Print Services Inc., a pioneering company that specialized in converting obsolete and non-standard film formats, such as Nitrate and 3-Strip Technicolor, to modern stable film formats compatable with television. This process became the forerunner of what is now known as Motion Picture Preservation and Restoration. He eventually closed O.P.S., due to the advent of Telecine Video Tape Transfer and the decline of the 16mm and 35mm television markets. Paul retired in 1986.

Paul's success in the industry was due to a remarkable talent and a level of loyalty, honesty and integrity that is unmatched, even today.

His loves of his life were his wife, who passed away in 2001, his family, his friends and his dogs, Alice and Mush. His hobbies included Liberal Democratic Politics, Golf and a life long passion for Notre Dame Football.

Paul is survived by his three devoted children, Mary, Eileen and Paul Jr., his four grandchildren, a great grandchild and one great great grandchild.

Paul Jr. follows in his father's footsteps as a respected authority in the Film Restoration and Preservation field.

Paul's humor, wisdom and unconditional love will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him him.
