James was 1 of 10 children born to Lawson Berrey and Elizabeth Somers. Lawson was a native of Culpeper County, Virginia. Elizabeth was the daughter of Philip Somers and Barbara Sauers; Elizabeth's parents were from Germany, but died in Page County, Virginia.

In 1836, Lawson, Elizabeth and their children left Virginia to head west. They took their possessions by wagon to the Ohio River, traveled by steamer to Hannibal, Missouri, and then trekked the final 25 miles to their new home by wagon.

James' father supported the family as a cooper in Ralls County, Missouri. Lawson died there in 1846.

Shortly before his father's death, James married Emily Jane Scobee in April 1845. He first rented land in Ralls County, then purchased 80 acres.

James and Emily were the parents of 9 children in all. The oldest ones were born in Missouri before the family moved in 1852 to a tract of timber land in Richwoods Pct., Calhoun County, Illinois. James built a log home for the family in Calhoun and worked as a farmer.

In 1883, the Berreys rented out their farm and moved to a home in Batchtown.

At the time of his death, James was 72 years, 6 months and 4 days old. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily, who passed away in 1893.
