Son of Johan Peter Muth who was a silversmith who emigrated from Wurtenburg, Westphalia in 1750. The name Muth was anglicized and about 1785 Muth arrived in Charleston. He married Mary Dorothy Sigwald in 1787 and became a significant silversmith in Charleston. He had two sons who continued in the silver business until about 1840.
