A letter written by Dr. John R. Clark of Union Parish, Louisiana to his younger brother James Edwin Clark of Cherokee County, Texas states in part:

Shiloh, La.
November 3, 1866

....I consider that I am a great sufferer by the War having lost both my sons and nearly all my property, yet I have no fears that with ordinary luck I shall be able to make a support for myself and family, if I can only be permitted to keep the proceeds of my labor and am not robbed of it by the taxation, confiscation and other rascally schemes of the radical government of Thad Stevens, Sumner & Co.....

"A Genealogy of the Clark Family", by Henry William Clark, 1905 states: "William Clark enlisted in the Confederate States Army, was lieutenant of a Louisiana Regiment and died in Tennessee at the age of about 24 years."
