Rudolph 'Rudy' Mathes - JOHNSON CITY
Rudolph F. "Rudy" Mathes, age 90, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, October 11, 2010, at the James H. Quillen V.A Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.
A lifelong native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late William A. and Emma Bowers Mathes. He was a proud Army Veteran of World War II and was part of the D-Day invasion in Normandy. He received many medals of honor while in service, which include the Presidential Unit Citation, European-African-Mideastern Campaign, Silver Star, WW II Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal and the Belgian Fourragere Medal. He served under General Patton.
He was a member of Tacoma Church of God, and a member of the Masonic Lodge # 486.
Mr. Mathes was preceded in death by his first wife, Zella Mae Hicks Mathes, in 1993; sister, Louise Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred W. Higgins-Mathes, Johnson City; daughter, Nancy Williams, Atlanta, GA; a brother, Claude L. Mathes, Johnson City; two sisters, Betty Stout, Elizabethton, Beuna Stufflestreet, Bristol, TN; Six Grandchildren; Twelve Great Grandchildren; and Four Great Great Grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Mathes will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, from the chapel of Woodall-Anderson & Dugger Funeral Home with Chaplain James Pollard and Rev. Darrell Sovine officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Sylvia Beckelheimer, soloist, and Mr. Roddy Bird, Pianist.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M in the chapel of the funeral home.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, October 14, at 1:00 P.M. from the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the Nurses of the Community Care Center of the V.A Mountain Home. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 P.M. Thursday to travel in procession to the cemetery.
