James Screven was a member of the Provincial Congress that met in Savannah GA in July 4th 1775, as a member from St. Johns Parish. He was captain of the St. Johns Rangers and was made Brigadier General by the Georgia Legislature. He was killed in a skirmish with the British under Colonel Provost, about a mile south of Midway Church Nov 22nd 1778.
