Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in New York, at the start of Civil War he was received authority to recruit a regiment and was appointed Colonel in command of the 136th New York Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. He served at the Battle at Chancellorsville, the Chattanooga Campaign, Battle of Gettysburg and the Atlanta Campaign. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 8, 1865.
