Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A June 1861 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers before recieveing a commission as a Colonel of US Volunteers. He then served as Colonel and commander of the 21st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, and as Chief of Staff for Major General John J. Peck. On May 26, 1864 he was mortally wounded while bringing ammunition to Union troops at Petersburg, Virginia on May 26, 1864, and succumbed to those wounds 10 days later. He was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for his gallant conduct in the operations. Interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, his family erected a cenotaph for him in their plot in In Memoriam Cemetery in Wallingford, Connecticut.
