Jesse never married. He lived in southwest Polk County until 1893, then moved to northwestern Oklahoma and took up a homestead. In his final years, he returned to the area where he had grown up, and died in the home of his cousin Howard Hayter.
He was buried in Turkey Creek Cemetery, south of his sister and brother-in-law Mary and George Harper.
