He began the study of law in 1859 and was admitted to the Bar in 1863. He enlisted in the Union Army the same year and served as paymaster clerk in New Orleans during the Civil War. He was living in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, in 1870 (15th Ward), 1880 & 1900 (27th Ward). He was elected a judge of Court of Common Pleas No. 4 in 1882 and was reelected in 1892 and 1902. He became presiding judge of that court in 1897.
