Enlisted into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry, later also referred to as "Upton's Regulars on 21 August 1862 in Hartwick, New York. Mustered into Douglas Campbell's Co. E at Camp Schuyler on 23 August 1862 and went south with the regiment. Saw initial action at Antietam and then at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Spent the winter of 1862-63 in camp at White Oak Church, across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, where he was promoted to quartermaster on 1 February 1863. At the battle of Salem Church, where the Federal forces were more or less surprised while attempting to hook up with General Hooker at Chancellorsville, he was a great comfort to men of the 121st that were mortally wounded.
He survived and mustered out with the regiment at Hall's Hill, Virginia near Alexandria and across the Potomac from Washington D.C. on 23 June 1865.
After the war he became a lawyer moving to Kansas, where he was very successful and enjoyed the area. Later he served in the Spanish American War as a major.
