Hazard Stevens

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Son of Union Major General Isaas I. Stevens and first Governor of the Washington Territory, he was lawyer in practice when he enlisted in the Union Army. He was commissioned a Captain in the in the 79th New York Highlanders and fought in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. At the Battle of Chantilly, on September 1, 1862, he was severely wounded and his father General Isaas I. Stevens, was killed. After he recovered in early 1863, he was promoted Colonel Assistant Adjutant General of the Volunteers. On April 19, 1863, he was part of 3rd Division of the 9th Corps ordered to capture the Rebels at Fort Huger, Virginia. Leading the assault, he breached the enemy's works and captured the fort. For gallant leadership, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers. After the war, he moved to the Washington Territory, where he worked for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and the Federal Government. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
