Clifford C. Frey, 37, drowned last Saturday in a pond on his farm four miles west and one-fourth south of Mt. Clare. A horse which Frey was riding stepped into a hole at one end of the pond, throwing Frey into the water. Survivors include his widow, three children, his parents, and a brother. Funeral services were held in Guide Rock Tuesday. A sister of Clifford, Miss Irma Frey, was killed in Omaha when struck by a car about a year ago, and a brother, Harold, lost his life previously by drowning.

Clifford Frey Loses Life By Drowning

Tragedy stuck again Saturday at the Charles Frey family when Clifford Frey met his death by drowning in a pond on his farm six miles north and 2 1/2 miles east of Guide Rock.

Clifford and a neighbor, George Menke, were building a wire fence between the two farms. Clifford rode his pony into the pond and was thrown off into deep water. Hampered by heavy winter clothing, he was unable to extricate himself, and Mr. Menke was unable to rescue him.

Help was summoned immediately, but it was about three hours before his body was found with the aid of hooks. In the meantime, men were digging to drain the pond.

Funeral services for this fine young man were held Tuesday afternoon at the Guide Rock Methodist church (sic), with sermon by Rev. Daniel Escritt of the Christian church. Rev. E.H. Tipton of the Methodist church assisted in the service.

With Mrs. John Yung at the piano, Mrs. O.C. Lamb, Mrs. Marvin Booker, Mrs. Andrew Guy and Mrs. E.C. Moranville sang for the service. Burial was made in Guide Rock cemetery (sic).

Pallbearers were Clifford Frey's cousins - Robert Rasser, Percy Rasser, Wm. Rasser, Lee Frey, Clarence Zuberbuhler, Verlin Harris.

Clifford is survived by his wife, the former Miss Lena Rehtus, and their three children; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Frey of Red Cloud; and one brother, Howard, who lives on the Frey home farm northwest of Guide Rock. One brother, Harold, was drowned in California some years ago, and his sister, Miss Irene Frey, died in Omaha a few years ago, after being struck by a car.

The following obituary was read at the funeral service:

Clifford Carl Frey, son of Charley and Ada Frey, was born January 9th, 1909, near Guide Rock, Nebraska, where he lived during his early life. He attended Unity Evangelical church (sic), located 6 miles northeast of Guide Rock. On July 30, 1932, he was married to Miss Lena Rehtus in the Unity Evangelical church (sic). After the wedding he and his bride moved to the Amboy community where they lived for several years. Then they moved over near Red Cloud. Two years ago he and his family moved to the farm northeast of Guide Rock where they have lived since. Clifford Frey was an ambitious sort of man who took pride in his farm home. He was very fond of his family and enjoyed attending Sunday School and church with them in the Eckley school house.

Clifford's brother, Harold, preceded him in death in June, 1935; and his sister, Irene, passed on in March, 1944. Clifford died on April 18 (sic), 1947, at the age of 38 years, 3 months and 8 days of age.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Lena, and three children, Norman, Merlin, and Rose Ann; also his brother, Howard Frey of Guide Rock and both his parents. Many friends and neighbors mourn his passing.
