Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, which was part of the famous "Iron Brigade". At the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, he was mortally wounded, shot through his left side and bowels on the first day of thr battle (July 1, 1863), near McPherson's Woods. He died four days later and was temporarily buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg and later moved to the National Cemetery. (bio by: EFB III)
