John lived most of his earlier life in Gilroy, CA and Watsonville, CA. Although he did not receive a great deal of formal education, John had a talent for numbers and eventually became an expert accountant. He left school at 14 and began working in a Gilroy grocery store. In 1885, he became a bookkeeper for the Charles Ford Company in Watsonville where his uncle, Archibald Morey, worked.
On August 14, 1886, John married Winnifred Maud Chalmers, the daughter of Alexander Chalmers and Jane Searle Chalmers. They had two children, Norma Elaine and John Warren. When Alexander Chalmers built the Pajaro Valley Bank in 1888, John was elected cashier and secretary of the board of directors of this bank. In 1897, John was elected to the board of the Aromas mining Company.
In 1913, John retired from the Pajaro Valley National Bank. It was also during this time that he and Winifred divorced. John moved to the California Bay Area for a short time. He later relocated to Utah.
On December 3, 1921, John married Zora Wright of Provo, UT and together they had two daughters, Helen Elaine and Anna Mae. Zora also had three children, Virginia, Paul and Neil, from her first marriage to Gordon Rufus Bills of Idaho, who passed in 1920. These three children took the Morey last name.
John is noted in Census and other records to have worked in the mortgage industry and selling stocks and bonds. Between the time he left California and the time of his death, John lived in Utah, Michigan and Chicago, IL. It was in Chicago that John passed away on 24 January 1941 at the age of 78.
My family and I have spent a good deal of time searching for descendants of John Jacob Morey and his second wife, Zora Wright. It is hoped that the connection between John's two families can be made and that both can learn more of John's two separate lives.
Update: After searching for descendants of John's family with second wife, Zora Wright, I am happy to state that connections have been made among one of John's children and descendants of John's three other children.
