John B. Thatcher Sr., 79, who pioneered as a dairyman in Star Valley, and Teton basin, Idaho, died Saturday Oct 1st at 3:30 p.m. at his home, 1234 Alemeda avenue Salt Lake City, of a heart attack. He had lived in Salt Lake City about sixteen years.
His career took him into L.D.S. church, political, agricultural and mercantile pursuits in Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. Retired for the past six years, he had devoted himself to genealogical research for his church.
He was born in Payson, May 22, 1850 a son of John B. and Rachel Davis Thatcher. He was educated in Logan schools. In December, 1882, he married Nellie Muir in the old L.D.S. Endowment house and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho as a railroad employee.
After the death of his first wife, Mr Thatcher married Ida Haag of American Fork in August 1937. She survives him.
Also surviving are four sons: John B. Thatcher Jr. of Ogden, Preston Thatcher of Salmon Idaho; Frank Muir Thatcher of Afton, Wyo., and William Wallace Thatcher of San Francisco; four daughters, Mrs Mary Ellen Shaw and Mrs Elise Shaw of Tetonia, Idaho; Mrs Estelle Chivers of Challis, Idaho; and Mrs Rachel Hannah Brower of Montana; 40 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers; Nathan D. Thatcher of Salt Lake City, Gilbert Thatcher of Ogden and Howard Thatcher of Logan; two sisters, Mrs Lula Thirkill of Soda Springs, Idaho, and Mrs Lettie Edlefsen of Caldwell, Idaho.
Six half-brothers and half-sisters also survive; Raymond D. Thatcher of Salt Lake City, Roy D. Thatcher, Mrs Lottie Sampson and Mrs Ethel Pidcock of Ogden, Frank D. Thatcher of Logan and Kinksley D. Thatcher of Mammouth.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 5, at 12:15 p.m. in the University L.D.S. ward chapel.
Burial was in Wasatch Lawn Memorial park.
