Mortimer Dormer Leggett

Civil War Union Major General. Born in Ithaca, New York, he was Superintendent of schools in Zanesville Ohio, when the Civil War started. He helped organize the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and became it's Colonel in January, 1862. In November 1862, he was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the 3rd Divison,17th Corps and promoted Major General in July, 1864. On August 21,1865, having served honorably and being wounded at six times in combat, he resigned his position in the Army. After the war, he return to Ohio where he practiced law and President Grant appointed him commissioner of patents of the United States in 1871. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
