Civil War Union Major General. Born in Ithaca, New York, he was Superintendent of schools in Zanesville Ohio, when the Civil War started. He helped organize the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and became it's Colonel in January, 1862. In November 1862, he was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the 3rd Division, XVII Corps and promoted Major General in July 1865. On August 21, 1865, having served honorably and being wounded at six times in combat, he resigned his position in the Army. After the war, he returned to Ohio where he practiced law and President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him commissioner of patents of the United States in 1871.
