James William Denver

Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman. During the war with Mexico, he served as Captain in the 12th Regiment, US Infantry and moved to California in 1850. He was elected to the State Senate in 1851 and appointed California State Secretary in 1852. In 1855, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. From 1857 to 1859, he served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs and as Governor of the Territory of Kansas. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, President Abraham Lincoln commissioned him Brigadier General in command of all Federal troops in Kansas. Denver commanded the 3rd Brigade at the Siege of Corinth in 1862 and served as the Kansas Union garrison administrator until his resignation from the Army in March 1863. After the war, he practiced law in Washington D.C. and was as a delegate to Democratic National Conventions in 1876, 1880, and 1884. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
