Mabel was born in "Blackriver", Allegan, Michigan but lived there a very short time before the family moved to South Bend, Indiana where she was raised. She worked initially as a seamstress. After her marriage to Ben Marsh she worked for a time at one of the resorts in Sandusky, Ohio and her only child, Vera Jane, was born there. The family soon moved on to Windsor, Ontario where they ran their own Candy business.
