Mrs. Bertha Brandes, widow of the late Dedrich Brandes, died at 1 a.m. today at her home, 745 N. Denver Avenue.
Mrs. Brandes, who was 83 years old last February, was ill only the last 10 days, although her health had failed recently. Funeral arrangements were incomplete this morning.
Born in Posen, Germany, Mrs. Brandes came to this country as a girl. Following the death of her first husband, Albert Schultz, at Sterling, Ill., she took her eight children to Kansas. She later re-moved to Adams county, where she was married to Dedrich Brandes, father of Frank and E.A. Brandes of Hastings.
They resided on a farm in the Muriel vicinity until after Mr. Brandes' death October 20, 1909, when Mrs. Brandes moved to Hastings. She was active in women's circles of the First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Surviving her are five daughters and five sons. They are Miss Cora Brandes, Louis Brandes, Mrs. Clara Evans, Mrs. Anna Kindig, Herman Schultz, Albert Schultz, T.W. Schultz and Arthur Schultz, all of Hastings; and Mrs. Ella Hoppens and Mrs. Minnie Hoppens, both of Glenvil. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. August Priebe of Hastings.
