Benjamin P. Wheeler served in Company F of the 38th Alabama Infantry CSA.

Benjamin Perrine McMakin "Mack" Wheeler was born 7 April 1827, in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, the son of David and Elizabeth Courson (McMakin) Wheeler. He was named after his maternal grandfather Benjamin Perrine McMakin, son of Col. Alexander McMakin. Mack grew up in the Spartanburg District and was a favorite of his grandmother Mary (Carr) "Granny Mack" McMakin. He attended the Holly Springs Baptist Church with his family, and
when he moved to Fayette County, Alabama with his brothers Peter and Thomas and his sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Jane, he obtained a letter which he presented at the South Carolina Baptist Church:

We the United Baptist Church of Christ at Holley Springs do certify that Benj. P. Mc. Wheeler is an orderly member and in full fellowship with us and is hereby dismissed
from us when joined with another of our faith and order. Given by order of the church, Oct 14, 1847. Thomas R. Tucker, Church Clerk, Pro Tem.

His first wife, whom he married about 1852 was named Margaret, and according to Sally (Wheeler) Johnson her maiden name was Staggs. She was born in 1819 in
South Carolina and was the mother of Benjamin's six children. she died in January 1900. They attended the South Carolina Baptist Church until 1855, when he
was the prime mover in the formation of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. To his sorrow, the earliest interment at the cemetery was his son Edward, followed by his daughter Annie, both of whom passed away in early
childhood about the year 1856.
When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Confederacy, serving as a private in Company F, 38th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was noted as B. P. Wheeler on his service record. His service record indicates that he was shot in the foot at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia, 19 September 1863, and was captured and
sent to Rock Island Prison in Illinois. Margaret passed away, and he married, second, Mrs. Melissa Pennington, at the home of John E. Gault in Lamar County, 9 March 1900.

Your petitioner Melissa Wheeler respects to your honorable Board that she is a citizen of Lamar County and that she is the widow of B. P. Wheeler, and that her husband died the 2nd day of December 1905, and that she has not remarried. (I) was born at or near Vernon in the County of Lamar, State of Alabama on the sixth day of February 1845, being 70 years of age at the making of this affidavit.
That second affidavit was dated 27 April 1915. Mack was laid to rest at Mount Zion, where his tombstone reads as follows: Benjamin P. Wheeler 7 April 1827-2 December 1905.
