Ruth Baker Hans, 77,died in Austin, Texas on Wed., Sept. 8, 2010. She had a massive stroke and went into a deep sleep and peacefully passed away. Ruth was born in Port Arthur, Texas on Nov. 7, 1932 to Emery and Annie Baker. She was the youngest of their three daughters. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School and graduated in 1950. She married and soon became a mother. She moved to Brownsville, Texas where she lived for many years as a housewife and loving mother of four. She belonged to The First Presbyterian Church. in Brownsville, Texas, she furthered her education and became a secretary with superior bookkeeping skills and ultimately became an independent oil and gas consultant. She was a Sunday School teacher, a girl scout leader, and volunteered with many charities. She worked for Rio Grande Valley Gas Co. and later moved with her family to Corpus Christi, Texas and worked for Coastal States Petroleum Company. After that she worked for Gruy Management Services and eventually became self employed, providing bookkeeping services to many clients. After hurricane Celia hit and destroyed her home and marriage Ruth worked even harder to provide for her family. She was an amazing survivor. She married Joseph Hans in the 70's and embraced his entire family. She converted to Catholicism after she married Joe. She was, also a member of The First Baptist Church. She was especially fond of the Schoenstatt Sisters. Joe died in 1983. His mother, Anne 'Granny', survived him. Granny eventually moved in with Ruth who cared for her until she passed away at age 98. During this time Ruth's youngest daughter was killed and left behind three beautiful daughters who had lost their dad a year and a half before. Ruth, the grandmother, became their custodial guardian and took on the task of raising another family on her own. Ruth was involved in many organizations including a senate drug abuse committee, The Ark, and The Desk and Derrick Club. She wrote to her pen pals in the 'joint' and was a lifeline to many. She saved hundreds of love letters from everyone she loved, worked with, and reached out to. She had an incredible amount of energy and a funny sense of humor. She loved her family with all her heart. She endured and persevered through many hardships and did her very best to be kind, loving and supportive to her family, her friends, her community and to her beliefs. She believed that life is just practice for the hereafter. She was absolutely beautiful inside and out. Ruth retired when she was 73. She had Alzheimer's Disease. She lived in Austin, Texas for too brief a time. She resided at Barton Hills Assisted Living and was loved by an amazing staff that cared for her with love, respect and dignity. She was very happy and everyone adored her. She spent her days visiting with family, watching the birds, enjoying music and participating in many activities.
Ruth is predeceased by her parents, Emery and Annie Baker; her sister, Margie Dwight; her husband, Joseph Hans and her children, Kathy and L.A. 'Skippy' Weaver.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Shoemaker of Port Arthur, Texas; daughter, Lou Anne Whitis and son-in-law, Mike James of Wimberley, Texas; daughter, Suzanne and son-in-law Robert Vignaud of Austin, Texas; stepdaughter, Carol Hans of San Antonio, Texas; stepson, John Hans and daughter-in-law, Janet Hans; grandchildren, Eric Vignaud, Eden and J.J. Rodriguez, Tiffany Weaver, Erin Tobin, J.P. Hans, Amber Tobin, Blake Vignaud; and great grandchildren, M.J Bell., Skyler Abbott, C.J. And Bella Rodriguez. She left behind many other loving nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She has been reunited with all her loved ones that have passed before. She remains in the hearts of many forever and ever.
Memorial Services will be held at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Corpus Christi, Texas on Fri., Sept. 17, 2010 at 4 p.m. followed by a reception in the parlor. Pastor Yogi Gaertner and Father Roger Smith will be officiating at the service.
Interment will be held at a later date at Greenlawn Memorial Park In Groves, Texas.
