John married Frances Bowyer about 1610. They lived in Little Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England where John worked as a tailor. The family later moved to Bishop's Stortford. John and Frances became parents of Elizabeth, John II, Francis and Mary who died young.

The Dane family immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the mid-1630s. Initially, they lived in Roxbury, then later moved to Ipswich.

John's wife, Frances passed away shortly after arriving in Roxbury. On July 2, 1643, John was married to widow, Annis Chandler. She was the daughter of Francis Bayford and the widow of William Chandler.

The original memorial had the burial in Old North Parish Burying Ground, however there is no evidence of his burial at that location.
