2nd Lieutenant Boettcher served with the 395th Bomb Group, 590th Bomb Squadron aboard B-17F Flying Fortress #42-29500. He was one of nine airmen killed when the bomber crashed 16 miles east of Ellensburg, Washington, while operating from the Ephrata Army Air Base.

The body of Lieut. Eryle W. Boettcher, Bloomer, one of nine men killed in a Flying Fortress while on a routine flight from the Army Air Base, Ephrata, Wash., will arrive at the Rock Funeral Home at Bloomer Friday night. Lieut. Boettcher was born Sept. 26, 1911 at Bloomer and would have been 26 years of age at his next birthday. He was a graduate of the Bloomer High School, and won the American Legion award for being the outstanding student of his class. He was at the time of his enlistment a senior at the River Falls State Teachers College. On Feb. 13, 1943 he was awarded his silver wings and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut. in the Army Air Force. Eryle was a member of the Tilden Emmanuel Evangelical Church and a youth of high Christian ideals. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boettcher, one brother, Warren, and one sister, Arlene, all of Bloomer, as well as by both his grandmothers, Grandmother Boettcher and Kaste. Funeral services will he held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Rock Funeral Home, Bloomer, with a military escort, and at 2:30 o'clock from the Tllden Emmanuel Evangelical Church with his pastor The Rev. C. M. Schendel, officiating. Burial will be made in the Tilden Church cemetery, which is not [far] from the home farm. Life is something more than mere duration; it is depth and fulness and richness of experience. Therefore It is that some men live more in one year than others in a decade.
