Son of John Stokes, of 1, Huntington Place, Springburn, Glasgow.

Private Stokes died in a boating accident on The River Shannon, on Wednesday 14th July 1920.

Three colleagues
Private J. Brown
Private R. McClintock
Private H. McIlroy
were also drowned in the incident.

Their bodies were recovered on the Clare side of the River Shannon, and are buried in Shanakyle Cemetery, Kilrush.
His body was recovered on the Kerry side of the Shannon Estuary, and he was buried in Tralee.
