Vance W. Swinson, 87, of Parkersburg, veteran school administrator and instructor in this area of Illinois, died Saturday morning at Richland Memorial Hospital after a long period of poor health.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at King-Ingram Funeral Home at West Salem with Rev. Fred Schwarzlose assisted by Brother Richard Mason in charge. Interment will be at Oak Hill cemetery, Parkersburg.
Mr. Swinson , a native of Parkersburg community, served 46 years in school work. He was a graduate of DePauw University at Greencastle, IN and also attended college at Marion, IN. He was Superintendent of West Salem schools from 1915 to 1932. Prior to teaching at West Salem, he taught at Noble schools about sixty years ago. he also was principal of the Parkersburg high school for about ten years until the high school was discontinued. he also taught at Cisne high school prior to retirement about 20 years ago.
Mr. Swinson was never married and served as correspondent at Parkersburg for the Daily Mail for a number of years. He was known for assisting many students financially and in other ways in obtaining an education
Mr. Swinson was well-known for his mannerisms and philanthropies to the less fortunate.
He was a member of the Zion United Methodist church of West Salem and was a long-time member of the masonic Lodge at Marion, Indiana.
He has no survivors except three nephews residing in California and a cousin, O. M. Swinson of Dundas.
