Stephen Oates was one of nine children born to James and Mary Ann (Wyatt) Oates. Stephen Oates married Elizabeth Shipp in 1807, and they became the parents of 11 children.
According to a History of the Oates Family written by Charles Spencer Oates in 1937, Stephen Oates died and was buried in the Carolina Hills not far from the divide between the Neuse and Cape Fear Rivers.
After his death, his widow, Elizabeth, moved her household to Henry County, Alabama, in 1839, where she settled a few miles from Abbeville. Elizabeth died in there in 1866.

he was the great-great-grandson of James and Elizabeth Perry Oates.
Stephen Oates' great-great-grandfather, James Oates, was born in St. Michaill's Parish England, in 1660. James Oates immigrated to the English colony of North Carolina in 1690. On September 11, 1694, James Oates married a young widow, Elizabeth Perry Eivens, in Perquiman County, North Carolina. James Oates died October 3, 1703.
