Xavier Martinez Dies In Carmel

Artist, Renowned Through Entire World, Passes Here Today

Xavier Martinez, one of California's most distinguish¬ed artists and a member of the early San Francisco group which made that city famous for its culture, passed away this morning at his Carmel home. He had been in failing health for some time.
Although Mr. Martinez had not been painting actively for about ten years, he had
recently been working on a group, of sketches and drawings which he had planned to exhibit in Carmel.
He came to Carmel a few weeks ago and during that time renewed acquaintance with many old friends here with whom he had studied and worked in earlier days.
He spent much of his time in the bay area, with visits to the peninsula being infrequent. He was a member of the teacher staff at the Carmel Arts and Crafts summer school in 1912, a project which drew both students and famous artists alike from all parts of the country.
MANY HONORS
During his lifetime as an artist, Mr. Martinez received many paint¬ing honors, but one of which he had been the most proud was the inclusion of his name in the New York "World of Tomorrow" hall of fame.
This hall was dedicated to out¬standing men and women in the arts and sciences who, after having been born in another country, brought fame to the United States. Only other Californian included Father Junipero Serra.
Paintings by Xaviex. Martinez are included in permanent col¬lections at the San Francisco Legion of Honor, the Oakland Art Gallery and many private collections in this country and others.
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, February 7, 1869, Mr. Martinez was educated at the Liceo de Varones and was a graduate of the former Mark Hopkins Institute of San Francisco. He later was graduated from the Ecole Nationale et Speciale des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1899, and studied, un-der Gerome and Carriere.
FAMED TEACHER
He began painting in San Francisco in 1892 and in 1905 accepted a position as professor at the California School of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley. Many artists who are now well known studied under this famous painter and teacher.
In 1895 he received a gold medal from the San Francisco Art as¬sociation and received an honor¬able mention from the Paris exposition of 1900, as well as a gold medal and honorable mention from the 1915 San Francisco Exposition.
He was a member of the Bohemian club, Sketch club and Athenian club.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elsie Martinez and daughter, Miss Micaela Martinez, both of Carmel. A sister in Mexico also survives.
