Wilfred Bonney was born on Dec. 27, 1867, the son of William F. Bonney and Mary (Dunham)Bonney in Wareham, Ma.
He left school after the 8th grade. He was not interested in helping his father on the farm, but wanted to go to sea. His father took him to a friend who captained a trading schooner out of New Bedford, Ma. At the age of fourteen he signed on as a Cabin Boy. He had many tales about his ventures at sea, sailing around the world twice.
At one time, he was sent aloft during a storm to unfurl a sail and fell to deck, injuring his head. He was taken to a hospital in what he referred to as the "Black Hole of Calcutta where no one could understand him or he them. Two days passed and he returned to the schooner.
After arriving home, he went to work on a fishing vessel out of Gloucester, Ma. On one of their stops at Port Medway, Nova Scotia he met his future wife, Hannah "Etta" Foster. Her folks had gone to Canada from Marshfield as "Royalists" during the Revolutionary War.
Wilfred and Etta, as she was called, were married in Nova
Scotia and returned to Marshfield.
After his father died on Mar. 19, 1912, he was left some
money and he invested it in a fishing vessel that was built in St. Johns, New Brunswick. On one of his fishing trips, his vessel was taken over by the Canadian Government. This was at the beginning of the First World War (1917). He was paid a just sum by the Canadian Government and he was later able to buy another vessel that he named "The Grace Darling".
