Lt. Allan N. McDaniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jep McDaniel of Canton, was killed in action August 31 in the European war area, according to a message from the War Department. The telegram, which was addressed to his wife, follows: "The Secretary of War asks that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your husband, Second Lieutenant Allan N. McDaniel. Report received stated he died August 31 in European area. Letter follows." "The Adjustant General." McDaniel was a co-pilot of a flying fortress and had been stationed in England since the last of May. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in June, 1942, and entered preliminary flight school at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Tex. He was transferred to Coleman Flying School in Texas, where he took primary training and from there was sent to Good Fellow Field, San Angelo, Tex., where he received his basic traning. He was graduated from the advanced flying schol at Lubbock Field, Tex., in March of this year, at which time he received his wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant. McDaniel was born August 13, 1917, near Canton. He was graduated from the Canton High School in the class of 1935. While in high school he was active in athletics and music and in his senior year won the best citizen ward given by the Kiwanis Club. After graduation from high school he attended the University of Missouri at Columbia for two years and prior to entering the service was employed in Montana for several years. He was united in marriage to Miss Florence Ackerman of Glendive, Mont., and they have a young daughter, Judy. His wife and daughter have been with her parents in Montana. Besides his wife and daughter, McDaniel is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jep McDaniel; his sister, Marilyn; his brother, Harry Knight McDaniel, of Holly, Mich.; three nieces, Nettie Lee, Bobby Jean and Dorothy June McDaniel, and a nephew, George Allan McDaniel, all of Holly, Mich.; and many other relatives.
