William (born Wilhelm) Diedrich Christian Scheelje was born in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Prior to his emigration to the United States, he was a farmer (according to the ship's manifest)and married Helene Oltmer, daughter of Christian Oltmer and Helene Meins, in 1863 (according to the 1900 US Census). The Scheelje's arrived aboard "George" out of Bremen, Germany in New York on 8 November 1864. They lived in New York City were their children (three daughters and one son) were born. Subsequently, they moved to Brooklyn, New York. He was a liquor salesman and owned a bar at 12th Street and Fourth Avenue and lived at 173 12th Street in Brooklyn.

The Scheelje family, who have been traced through documents to the late fifteenth century, were small land owners for centuries, carpenters and bricklayers in Stedingerland,a low lying land to the west of Weser River in northwest Germany. He was the son of Diedrich (Dirk) Scheelje (born Hiddigwarden bei Berne) and his third wife, Maria Catharina Bohnhagen (born Delmenhorst). He had four half siblings and eleven full siblings. His father was an inn keeper and miller in Gut Altona, Dotlingen, Landkreis Oldenburg, Lower Saxony and later an inn keeper in Steinhausen, Bockhorn, Landkreis Friesland, Lower Saxony, Germany.
